The Devil and the Fourth of July

I seen the devil and the glint in his eye
I seen the devil on the fourth of July
Fireworks strafed the northern sky
Like bombs bursting into a billion fireflies

Couples danced with abandoned glee
When I turned they were all looking at me
And the tallest among them spoke forcefully
Saying I am the devil, you will come with me

My name is Randy, I said with a smile
Did you know I was born on the fourth of July?
He showed me his hands that turned into claws
Smiled harshly and then we started to fall

Don't worry, he said with a sly kind of grin
I'm the devil and I have chosen you to begin
Then he howled, there was a sweep and a rolling of thunder
I can tell you're afraid and starting to wonder

He was strong and he knew a lot about me
I was light and I knew that he wanted to see
For in me were the stars and the worlds of suns
Shining moonbeams on snow-covered mountains

I am power! he shouted--the slip had begun
I am riches and fame and comfort and fun!
I am all these and more, and I'll give them to you
If you'll just touch the toes of one of my shoes!

I felt for the poor poke, really I did,
Felt his deep-seated misery
Felt his hunger for love that he couldn't see
Except as ultimate mystery

And there I stood plainly clad, no big deal,
But content inside
The circle of the mystery of love,
Of which the devil knew nothing at all
