Joining a Chat Room

1. Enter your user-name or handle into the "Name" field in the Login screen.

2. Click on "Join" or press "Enter"

If a password is required, enter the password in the login screen.

Java or HTML?

If you are behind a firewall or do not have a Java-enabled browser (including WebTV users), you will need to select the HTML client.

If you do not know which client you should use, try the Java one first, and if you receive a browser error go back and use the HTML one.

Chatting in a Chat Room

To All Users:

Once you are logged in to the Chat Room, type a message into the field at the bottom of the screen.

When you press the "Enter" key on your keyboard, or the "Send" button to the right of the text field, your message will be seen by the other members of the Chat Room.

Send a Private Message

1. To send a private message to a particular user, select the user’s name from the user list. The "Private" box will automatically be highlighted. Only the select users will see the message.

You will notice that your name and the name of the recipient with be enclosed in double quotes, indicating that you have sent a private message.

2. To switch from Private chat to Public chat mode, simply select the "All Users" entry from the user list.

Clearing the Screen

The "Clear" button erases all the current messages in the Chat area box.

Instant Translation

Our Chat Rooms have Instant Translation in 6 languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

The Chat Room allows you to specify which language you would like to Send and Receive in. If you speak Spanish, and want to type your messages and receive messages from others in Spanish, you would set both the Send and Receive menus to Spanish.

This means that messages sent to you would be translated into Spanish, and all messages that you send will be translated from your original Spanish to whatever language the recipient has selected.

If you are new to a language, or have difficulty typing in one, you can set the Send and Receive menus to different languages. For instance, if you speak English, but are practicing your French, you might want to Send messages in English and Receive messages in French, because you read French better than you write it.

Ignore Messages from Another Member

If you would like to ignore messages from a specific member of a Chat Room, select the member's name in the Member List and check the "Ignore" selection.

No messages will be displayed from that user until you uncheck the Ignore selection.

Invite a Friend with In-the-Box™

To invite your friends to join you in your chat room, simply click on the "Invite" button while within your chat room.

You will be taken to a Chat In-the-Box™ forwarding page where you can enter as many E-mail addresses as you like to forward your chat room.

Activate Chat List

This feature allows the user to join other chat rooms if the "Active Chats" button is enabled.

3. Click "Jump to Chat" (which will switch you automatically to the other Chat Room) or "Jump to Web" which will open a new browser window and load the page containing the desired chat room.

To make a Chat Room private, simply precede the name with * (i.e. *Jane's Private Room).

Anyone who tries to create a chat room with the same name will be taken to this newly created chat room.

Navigate the Internet

If you wish to continue surfing the Internet while chatting, you can use this feature.

Click on "Show Advanced" then click on "Navigate Internet"

A new browser window will open to the Multicity.com homepage, and you can type in a new url to browse elsewhere!

View Only Private Messages with Show Broadcast Messages

When "Show Broadcast Msg" is not checked in the Advanced Menu, only private messages will be shown - messages sent to ALL users are NOT displayed.

This allows less text to appear on your Chat Room screen.

Detach: Open your Chat Room in a Separate Window

If you want to have your Chat Room detach from the browser window do the following:

1. Press "Detach" once inside the Chat Room.

2. Then minimize the browser window.

Do not close the window, because it will disconnect the Chat Room. This function is suggested for optimum viewing of the Chat Room.
